Item Inequality, Higher Education and Knowledge Democracy(Newsletter of Association of Commonwealth Universities, 2020) Hall, Budd LIn this article, published in the Spring 2020 newsletter of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Budd L. Hall looks at inequality and what it asks of higher education. It begins with the scale of poverty and homelessness in places as different as Victoria and India, and with research by Wilkinson and Pickett showing that both rich and poor fare better in more equal societies. The article then asks what a knowledge democracy movement might look like, drawing on John Gaventa’s idea of a knowledge strategy and on the work of Nyerere and Freire. Such a movement is kept apart from the knowledge economy, community engagement and open access to information, which are treated as supports rather than the movement itself. It closes by asking how community-university partnerships can strengthen knowledge democracy.Item Knowledge democracy: Opening our doors to all knowledge systems(UNESCO, 2020) Hall, Budd L; Tandon, RajeshItem Research for impact approaches in CLARE: Bridging science and action(International Development Research Centre, 2024) Rawden, Laura; Carter, SuzanneAchieving research impact in the adaption and resilience field requires novel and inclusive approaches that can lead to transformational impact. This working paper provides insight into the methods being used by 19 research projects under the CLARE programme. The approaches mentioned here are not exhaustive but reflect on five broad types of approaches, namely: Co-creation labs, climate risk narratives, visual storytelling, citizen science, and behavioural science and psychology. Specific examples from each project are provided, detailing the problems they are seeking to address, the tools and methods applied as well as the communities and stakeholders they are working with to find joint solutions. Some early results are shared in the form of mini case studies, pointing to the effectiveness of the approaches.Item Bridging knowledge cultures: A guide for community practitioners and community organizations(UNESCO Chair, 2024) Lepore, Walter; Hall, Budd L; Tandon, RajeshThis guide by Walter Lepore, Budd Hall and Rajesh Tandon is about helping community practitioners and organisations build stronger research partnerships with universities. It draws on the larger Bridging Knowledge Cultures project, which studied ten K4C hubs across Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Colombia and Canada. The book explores partnerships in areas such as fishing communities, maternal health care, waste management, and early childhood education. Community knowledge is rooted in lived experience and oral tradition, while academic knowledge is typically validated through peer review and disciplinary standards, a gap that often leaves community knowledge undervalued within formal academic settings. It closes with practical recommendations for practitioners facilitating collaboration between communities and universities, pointing to trust, mutual respect, and the recognition of practices like storytelling as legitimate forms of knowledgeItem Local knowledge, social movements and participatory research: Indian perspectives(Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), 2021-11-30) Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA)
