Participatory research in empowerment of people

Abstract

This article by Rajesh Tandon talks about the emergence and evolution of participatory research as an alternative research methodology that has challenged the monopolistic control of knowledge by professional researchers. The article mentions the discomfort of professional researchers with the limitations and oppressive nature of classical research, and the need to address the increasing exploitation of a large majority of people. As dominant research socializes researchers into value positions that maintain the status quo, participatory research has become the alternative that provides access to knowledge for the have-nots. The theory of society is outlined that identifies direct and indirect mechanisms of exploitation against common people, positioning knowledge as the core basis of control. The article concludes by arguing the need for participatory research to also make contributions to address the indirect mechanisms of exploitation and clarify the role of researchers as organic intellectuals.
