| dcterms.abstract | This compilation gathers thirteen impact case studies from the University of Victoria's Office of Community-University Engagement, profiling community-based research projects carried out between 2005 and 2019. Each entry follows a shared format, covering partners, funding, timeframe, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals addressed, alongside motivations, student roles, key findings, and outputs and outcomes. The projects span waste picker cooperatives in São Paulo, rain garden design with a Victoria elementary school, transportation safety research with Coast Salish communities, low-carbon energy modelling, and rural women's farming collectives in South Africa, among others. Each case also assesses the extent of community collaboration, ranging from limited engagement to full partnership. Recurring challenges include sustaining trust among community and academic partners, securing adequate funding and staffing, and balancing institutional and community priorities. The case studies highlight students as active contributors to the research itself, while reflections from faculty and community partners emphasise trust, sustained relationships, and shared responsibility in achieving impactful community-based research. |
