Starting from Nina: The Poetic Soul of Paulo Freire
(Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education (CASAE)., 2023) Hall, Budd L; Barndt, Deborah; Jackson, Edward; Martin, D’Arcy; Thomas, Barbara
This collaborative, co-authored article by Budd Hall, Deborah Barndt, Edward Jackson, D’Arcy Martin and Barbara Thomas explores the poetics of the work of Paulo Freire, the legendary Brazilian philosopher and educator. All five authors are themselves poets or people who have used poetry in their work as adult educators and facilitators of social justice. They believe that this is the first English-language publication of the poem “Recife Forever,” written by Freire himself about the city of his birth. It was written in Chile during his years of exile by the Brazilian dictator.

Influencing a global movement: Notes the founding of the Consejo de educacion de adultos de America Latina (CEAAL)
    (0000) Hall, Budd L
In this piece, Budd L. Hall recalls how the Consejo de Educación de Adultos de América Latina (CEAAL) came to be founded. He starts with the creation of the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) after the 1972 UNESCO conference in Tokyo, and his own work with the Chilean sociologist Francisco Vio Grossi on a participatory research network. The account then follows the 1979 ICAE meeting in Helsinki, where the decision was made to back Vio Grossi and the popular education movement in organising a Latin American body. It describes the Caracas meeting that led to CEAAL in 1982, and the 1985 World Assembly in Buenos Aires, where CEAAL held its first General Assembly. Hall offers these as personal reflections on the early years.

To change the world: Latin American contributions to the development of participatory research
    (2021) Hall, Budd L
Budd Hall traces the Latin American roots of participatory research through the scholars who shaped his own thinking, Paulo Freire, Joao Bosco Pinto, Francisco Vio Grossi, Carlos Rodrigues Brandao and Orlando Fals Borda. He locates the origins of this research tradition not in Europe or North America but in the independence and democracy struggles of the global South during the 1960s and 70s. Freire's idea of reading the world through dialogue and thematic investigation, Pinto's place-based praxis in Brazil, Vio Grossi's work linking participatory research to historical materialism, Brandao's distinction between solitary, solidarity and participant research, and Fals Borda's four principles for working with grassroots communities each receive attention. The account closes with Fals Borda's idea of sentipensantes, people who think and feel at once, as a guiding image for knowledge workers committed to social transformation.
