Item Imagine/Learning: Thoughts from Two adult educators(Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education, 2014) Hall, Budd L; Clover, Darlene E.Does it matter where the academic home of the study of adult education is? In this paper we share our reflections on the implications of the institutional location of the discipline of adult education within universities in Canada and elsewhere. We speak of the historic tensions between the less structured and often transformational vision of adult education and the highly regulated learning contexts of schooling, and we suggest adult education theory and practice can be found in many other disciplinary clusters in all our universities. Wherever the formal study for adult education is located, its purpose is always to strengthen capacity for resistance and transformation. Item Item Participatory democracy and participatory research(European Political Science Review, 2025) Asenbaum , Hans; Bussu, Sonia; Escobar, Oliver; Harris,ClodaghWhile normative theories of participatory democracy and practical experiences of participatory research share a common democratic commitment, the two fields have emerged and to date exist in isolation from each other. This article bridges this divide and asks what participatory democracy and participatory research can learn from one another. It argues that participatory democracy can learn how to realize its own democratic ideals within its research practice and participatory research can deepen its normative commitment by connecting its practices to a larger participatory vision. The article illustrates this by engaging with three examples in which participatory democracy researchers conduct participatory research projects. It finally reflects critically on how the shared participatory commitments of both fields can be realized within the neoliberal university embedded in competitive market economies.Item Voices of change: participatory research in the United States and Canada(BERGIN & GARVEY, 1993) Park, Peter; Brydon-Miller, Mary; Hall, Budd L; Jackson, TedThis book is a collection of articles which focus on the North American experience in participatory research. The authors have all been directly engaged in participatory research. Some of us have also been involved in theoretical elaboration and quite a few of us have been involved with creating or maintaining networks, centers, or other structures which support the work of many other organizations and individuals. I would submit that the fact that each of us has been engaged in practical, theoretical, and institutional aspects of the participatory research discourse gives our work its flavor.Item Research for impact approaches in CLARE: Bridging science and action(International Development Research Centre, 2024) Rawden, Laura; Carter, SuzanneAchieving research impact in the adaption and resilience field requires novel and inclusive approaches that can lead to transformational impact. This working paper provides insight into the methods being used by 19 research projects under the CLARE programme. The approaches mentioned here are not exhaustive but reflect on five broad types of approaches, namely: Co-creation labs, climate risk narratives, visual storytelling, citizen science, and behavioural science and psychology. Specific examples from each project are provided, detailing the problems they are seeking to address, the tools and methods applied as well as the communities and stakeholders they are working with to find joint solutions. Some early results are shared in the form of mini case studies, pointing to the effectiveness of the approaches.Item Participatory action research feminist trailblazer Marjorie Mbilinyi - Transformative feminism in Tanzania (No 1)(2022-05-29) Maguire, Patricia; Oddy, Jessica
