Abstract

The long-planned for meeting of regional coordinators of the International Council for Adult Education's participatory research program took place May 1, 2 and 3, 1985 in Toronto sponsored by the ICAE and the Participatory Research Group, coordinators of the North American PR network. The last time we met as a full group was in 1982 in Mexico in conjunction with the first Latin American regional seminar on Participatory Research. Since then, different groupings of us have met informally when we happened to be attending the same meeting or seminar (Paris, 1982; Pozzuoli (Italy), 1984; Moscow, 1984). However, for some time now coordinators have stressed the need for a meeting where we could share and evaluate the regional and international aspects of our work, especially as we plan for the ICAE World Assembly in November 1985. What have been the achievements in the different regions? What problems are being encountered? How do different coordinators' envisage participatory research in their region? How do they see their role? What importance do we give to our international network? What should the priorities be for the next year? How can we make better use of the international links and possibilities we have?

Description

The report describes the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) regional coordinators' meeting held in May 1985 in Toronto. The gathering aimed to evaluate the progress of Participatory Research (PR) and share insights from various regions, including Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Discussions centered on the role of PR in social movements, its theoretical underpinnings, and the challenges of systematizing its practices. Key issues raised included the differences between PR and popular education, the strategic use of PR for political action, and the development of regional PR networks. The meeting also highlighted the growing interest in PR within universities and its application in local development and social transformation.
