The handloom sector plays a key role in India’s economy, giving jobs to over 65 lakh people. Despite tough competition from powerlooms and mills, it has survived due to government support and welfare schemes. Handloom fabric production has grown massively—from 500 million to over 7352 million sq. metres since the 1950s. This sector now makes up around 19% of the country’s total cloth production. It also helps boost India’s export earnings significantly.
The Handloom sector contributes a significant role in the country's economy by providing direct employment to over 65 lakh persons engaged in weaving and allied activities. This sector has been able to withstand competition from the powerloom and mill sectors due to effective implementation and financial assistance through various developmental and welfare schemes. As a result the production of handloom fabrics registered more than ten fold increase from a level of 500 million sq. metres in the early fifties to 7352 million sq. metres in 1999-2000. This sector constitutes nearly 19% of this total cloth production of the country and also contributes substantially to the export earnings.
