Abstract
The World Bank's policy on Participation was announced in September 1994, with the publication of its report The World Bank and Participation. Subsequently, the NGO Working Group (NGO WG) on the World Bank, at its annual meeting in October 1995, decided to focus on the World Bank's Participation policy in a concerted manner and a Sub-Group on Participation was formed. The purpose of this Sub-Group was to:
Monitor and influence effective implementation of the Bank's policy and practice of Participation, and
Promote wider and deeper involvement of civil society actors in the Bank's participatory development efforts.
Description
The World Bank introduced its Participation Policy in 1994 through its report The World Bank and Participation. In 1995, the NGO Working Group on the World Bank decided to focus on this policy. A Sub-Group on Participation was formed to monitor its implementation. The aim was to ensure the Bank's practices were truly participatory. It also worked to enhance civil society's role in development efforts.
