Abstract

The Institute of Educational Strategy Studies and Socio-logical Research, Tamil Nadu jointly with the Department of Adult and Continuing education, Andhra University organized this workshop on Participatory Research for Development and Change, sponsored by the International Council for Adult Education, Canada, and Public Enterprises Centre for Continuing Education, New Delhi. The workshop was held at the Village Reconstruction Organization, Guntur from 26-28 December 1979. Within the framework of the Participatory Research project of the TCAE, and under the area of innovation: Participatory Research for Development and Change", this workshop was the second in India of a series of activities in the Asian Network. The first one comprised of Participatory Research Meeting held in New Delhi from 7 to 9 February 1979 to identify major issues of Participatory Research and to develop guidelines for further activities.

Description

This 1979 workshop in Guntur, India focused on deepening the understanding of Participatory Research (PR) as a method of development rooted in people's action and agency. Participants explored PR’s philosophical foundations, distinguishing it from community development and emphasizing human dignity, inclusion, and action. The workshop involved field visits, conceptual debates, and concluded with key recommendations to strengthen PR practice across Asia. It reinforced PR as a transformative and interdisciplinary process that changes both community and researcher.
