Working Analysis of the Toronto Urban Neighbourhood Participatory Research Project

Abstract

This paper is an analysis of work with a resident's association in Toronto. Its focus is the potential for participatory research in that setting. The letter and numbers of each section follows the structure of the Framework for Analysis of Participatory Research by the North American Team of the Participatory Research Project (I.C.A.E.), Toronto, 1978. The structure of each section is twofold: a) descriptions of specific experiences, emphasizing the importance of concrete detail, and b) reflections upon the experience as significant for participatory research theory and techniques. Much of the material here would not be here without countless informal discussions with all of the members of the North American Team. Special thanks goes to Budd Hall for the on-the-street support and practical advice, and to Ted Jackson for his balancing insights on rural settings and important unifying themes.
