Abstract
In order to meet the first goal, it was proposed that several participatory research case projects be presented according to the 'Guidelines for Describing Participatory Research Case Pro-jects' which had been developed by the Center especially for that purpose. On the basis of these presentations Working Groups' would then meet to discuss topics relating to the presentations with the idea of developing statements which could be passed on to other participatory researchers and interested parties. The second goal would be met through making contacts throughout Europe of participatory research practitioners and institutes and involving them in the network. Thirty actively engaged researchers from thirteen European countries ultimately attended the seminar. All of these researchers had been employed participatory research procedures in their work. Here the report of the seminar is presented. It contains a short introduction on the concept of participatory research and some data about the history and present state of the international participatory research network. The report follows with a brief summary of the events of the seminar: summaries of lectures, case-studies and discussions. The last part presents some results of the seminar and plans for the future of a European network.
Description
This section explores the concept and organization of participatory research, emphasizing its connection to movements like action research and planned change. It presents key characteristics of participatory research, including shared power, collaboration, and the ultimate goal of social transformation. The section also touches on the integration of qualitative and quantitative research, decentralization in policy, and the role of science in society. Additionally, it examines a Dutch project focused on decentralizing adult education policy, highlighting the need for localized planning and the involvement of diverse stakeholders. The section concludes with methodological insights on participatory research, such as breaking the subject-object dichotomy and its potential as an educational tool.
