Participatory research is not well established in Aotearoa (New Zealand), but there are precedents, and there are some current examples of work which incorporates some of the elements of participatory research.. I am pleased to record my reflections on attempts I have made, because the process has been valuable in both the Aotearoa context, and in terms of my international contact. I shall describe how I got involved in participatory research, and discuss where I have found the real problems to be. It is sometimes called participatory 'rapid' assessment because the information is collected in a few weeks. PRA is a form of assessment based on the participation of a range of different people including people from the community affected by the work. The emphasis is on participation rather than on being particularly rapid (hence PRA is sometimes called participatory relaxed assessment). The aim is for people to analyse their own situation, rather than to have it analysed by outsiders. This makes it a particularly useful tool for any kind of community development.Item Issues to Consider(0000) International Council for Adult Education.; Participatory Research NetworkA list of 'issues to consider' when doing participatory research, including: goals, control, role of the participatory researcher, training, participatory evaluation, guidelines for participatory research, and obstacles and limitations.Item Preliminary Synthesis of Methodologies used by the VPC Researchers(0000)This report explores the methodologies employed by the VPC research group to study the complex dynamics of violence, marginalization, and participatory social action across diverse contexts.
